Septage pumped inside the City of Chilliwack goes to the City's wastewater treatment plant. Since October 2023 the plant only accepts septic and holding-tank waste from properties within city limits. Areas such as Cultus Lake are outside the city (they're part of the Fraser Valley Regional District), so their waste has to go to a different facility. If you're near the city boundary, tell us your address when you book.

Much of Chilliwack sits on the Sardis–Vedder aquifer, which the City describes as highly sensitive, with the water table only five to ten metres down in places. In Yarrow, which is entirely on septic, the City says the water table sits very close to the surface. The less soil there is between a drainfield and groundwater, the less room there is to treat effluent before it reaches the aquifer. That makes it especially important to keep solids out of the field by pumping on time, and to watch for soggy ground over the field during the wet months.
Septic systems in Chilliwack are governed by BC's Sewerage System Regulation, administered by Fraser Health. It requires owners to maintain their system according to its maintenance plan and keep records, and requires an authorized person to design and file new systems and most repairs. On top of that, the City of Chilliwack recommends pumping every two to three years and a yearly inspection. That's more frequent than the general three-to-five-year guideline and reflects local groundwater conditions, but it's a recommendation, not a bylaw.
Possibly, but expect extra steps. Because the water table in Yarrow is so close to the surface, the City of Chilliwack requires a hydrogeological assessment for secondary suites there. More occupants means more daily flow, so the existing tank and drainfield may need to be assessed, and upgraded or replaced by an authorized person with a filing to Fraser Health, before a suite is approved. Check with the City early in your planning.
Only human waste and toilet paper should go down the toilet. Wipes (including ones labelled "flushable"), sanitary products, paper towels and tissues don't break down in a septic tank; in a 2019 Canadian study, none of the 23 "flushable" products tested broke down enough to pass safely through pipes. In the kitchen, keep fats, oils and grease out of the sink. With the water table as high as it is in parts of Chilliwack, anything that clogs the drainfield is worth avoiding.
